The course description for this class was:
The Basics of Business Web Sites
Deciding What is Best for Your Business
How and why is the web used in effective (and
not-so-effective) ways to do business? This class will try to
answer that question and help the small business owner better
understand their own needs and goals for a website. We will
discuss the difference between a web presence and a functional,
effective business website that generates revenue. Emphasis will
be placed on helping the small business owner determine what it is they
are trying to accomplish and how this can be achieved while optimizing
budgetary frugality and positive results.
A portion of the class time will focus on
understanding the terminology and definitions of the web world,
including the "acronym soup" used in this discipline (i.e. ISP, IIS,
CGI, POP, .ASP, .NET, etc.). The terms and acronyms discussed are
not merely of academic interest; knowledge of what these terms mean and
what they mean to your business specifically will ultimately save you
time and money as you prepare to do business on the web.
We will also discuss what exactly must happen in
order for your business to have a website. We will start from
inception and proceed through implementation covering such topics as
registering a domain name, choosing a web hosting provider and
designing your web site. The discussion will cover some of the
pros and cons associated with a do-it-yourself model and the
let-someone-else-do-it model. Bottom-line figures for each step
of the process will be presented to help you understand the expenses
involved.
At the end of this short course you will be better
prepared to address concerns regarding your business website and how to
best implement the site. You will also have the knowledge needed
to do further research and to create a working budget for your web site
design.
